Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that focuses on the prevention and treatment of malocclusions and dentofacial deformities using orthodontic appliances.

At Medicadent Stomatologia, we provide orthodontic treatment for both young people and adults. In modern orthodontics, we offer solutions for malocclusions, as well as cater to individual patient preferences with aesthetic appliances.

Types of orthodontic appliances offered at Medicadent clinic:

Removable Appliances: These are appliances that can be taken out of the mouth for activities such as eating or tooth brushing. They are commonly recommended for children and are usually the initial stage of orthodontic treatment before later transitioning to fixed appliances.

Removable orthodontic appliances are available in two main variants:

Plate Appliances: These appliances consist of a plastic plate with metal wires that can be shaped accordingly during the orthodontic treatment.
Aligner Appliances: These appliances are made of transparent material and resemble clear aligners that fit over the teeth. During treatment, the aligners are replaced periodically, exerting moderate pressure on the teeth to move them to the desired position. Removable orthodontic appliances are effective solutions that yield noticeable results while allowing for full functionality. Patients can easily remove the appliance for eating and oral hygiene, minimizing inconvenience.

Fixed Appliances: These appliances involve the use of continuous force applied to the teeth using a special metal archwire that is secured to brackets bonded to the
teeth with ligatures (small elastic bands).

In the case of fixed appliances, we offer the following options at our clinic:

Metal Braces (with elastic bands): These braces consist of metal brackets in a silver color.
Ceramic Braces: Considered aesthetic braces, they are made of tooth-colored porcelain, making them less visible than metal braces.
Crystal Braces: These are also aesthetic braces, featuring transparent crystals for a discreet appearance.
Self-Ligating Metal Braces (without elastic bands): This type of fixed appliance features special brackets integrated with wires. Unlike traditional metal braces, they do not require additional elastic bands to hold the wires in place, making them more convenient to use and reducing the frequency of orthodontic visits. Additionally, self-ligating brackets exert less pressure on the teeth, potentially increasing comfort during wear.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

The duration of orthodontic treatment with braces is individual and depends mainly on the type of malocclusion and the chosen appliance.

Why is orthodontic treatment important?

Orthodontic treatment is not only about improving appearance but also about promoting a healthy masticatory system. Untreated malocclusions can lead to gum diseases, tooth decay, or temporomandibular joint disorders.

What are the causes of malocclusions?

For some patients, malocclusion is a congenital defect resulting from difficult childbirth or facial abnormalities. However, there are many factors that can contribute to the development of malocclusions later in life. These include teeth grinding or clenching (bruxism), lip and cheek sucking, continuous biting of objects (such as pens, pencils), and mouth breathing (known as the “third tonsil”).

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

The duration of orthodontic treatment is individual for each patient as it depends on various factors. However, the average treatment time is generally estimated to be between 12 and 18 months. This period may seem relatively long, but it is important to consider that teeth in the oral cavity move slowly, and their alignment requires time and patience.

How often are follow-up visits scheduled during treatment?

The frequency of follow-up visits is determined individually with the orthodontist based on the type of malocclusion. For most patients, these visits occur every 4 to 6 weeks.

Does orthodontic treatment with braces hurt?

Orthodontic treatment is generally not painful. Some discomfort, pressure, or mild soreness may occur after visits when the braces are adjusted or activated.

What is retention treatment?

After completing orthodontic treatment with braces, it is recommended to use a second retainer appliance. Its purpose is to maintain the achieved tooth alignment. The retainer can take the form of a wire bonded to the inner side of the dental arch or a removable appliance like a clear aligner.
